About the Registration for Brain Donation

People without degenerative brain diseases can also donate brains.
We can clarify the differences between changes in the brain due to the normal aging process and due to degenerative brain diseases only by comparing brain tissues of patients with degenerative brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and those without. By comparing them, we can also conduct other relevant research.


People with or without dementia who are willing to participate in brain donation, can refer to the contents below.

1. For People with Dementia, Who Are Willing to Donate Their Brain

For dementia patients who are willing to their donate brain to the PNUH Brain Bank, clinical examinations related to dementia (including a clinical assessment, blood test, neuropsychological test, MRI of the brain, and PET scans of the brain) and other tests stated below will be provided with the financial support of the government.


Specifically, for dementia patients who are willing to donate their brain to the PNUH Brain Bank, not only basic examinations related to dementia but also yearly clinical assessments and neuropsychological tests, and neuroimaging examinations once every 3 years will be provided with the financial support of the government.


The blood and cerebrospinal fluid will be also be collected from the dementia patients who are willing to donate their brains to the PNUH Brain Bank. The blood and cerebrospinal fluid that you donate will be preciously used in basic research on the brain, especially related to dementia.


For dementia patients who are willing to donate their brains to the PNUH Brain Bank, we will do our best to check the patient’s condition periodically and provide medical help anytime it is needed until the time of the patient’s death.


Also, for dementia patients who are willing to donate their brains to the PNUH Brain Bank, a grant to help with the funeral costs will be provided at the time of the patient’s death as a way of showing our respect to the deceased for his/her noble intention.


2. For People with General Volunteer, Who Are Willing to Donate Your Brain

For dementia patients who are willing to donate brains to PNUH Brain Bank, clinical examinations, related to dementia(including a clinical assessment, blood test, neuropsychological test, MRI of the brain, PET scans of the brain, etc.) and stated below, will be provided with the financial support of the government.


Specifically, for dementia patients who are willing to donate brains to PNUH Brain Bank, not only basic examinations related to dementia, but also yearly clinical assessments and neuropsychological tests, and neuroimaging examinations in every 3 years will be provided with the financial support of the government.


The blood and cerebrospinal fluid will be collected as well from the dementia patients who are willing to donate their brains to PNUH Brain Bank. The blood and cerebrospinal flood that you donate will be preciously used in basic researches on brain, especially related to dementia.


For dementia patients who are willing to donate their brains to PNUH Brain Bank, PNUH Brain Bank will do our best to check the patient’s condition periodically and provide medical help anytime it is needed, until the very time of patient’s death.


Also, for dementia patients who are willing to donate their brains to PNUH Brain Bank, the grant to help with funeral costs will be provided at the time of patient’s death as part of way that we show our respect to the deceased for his/her noble intention.
